Short story collections are typically uneven in terms of quality, some stories stronger than others, and whilst that is certainly true in this collection, that doesn't stop it from being a great read. Williams' writing style was beautifully crafted and elegant, whilst retaining a sharp humour, but some of the stories were too weak to make this book a full success for me. An enjoyable reading experience but some parts of it are forgettable. However, Lara Williams shows great potential and I look forward to seeing more of her work (I would give this 3.5 but am unable to).

Completely captivating and disarming. There's a revelation to take your breath away in every one of its twenty-one stories. Slim as they are, each is a wonder to behold. After reaching the end, I immediately wanted to dive back in, to rediscover the surprises woven into the deeply human characters and to uncover more that I'm sure I missed. Not a word is wasted, and the sentences read as though they were written for you. The familiarity Williams seems to have with each character is stunning, given the variety in these pages. And the ending is pitch-perfect, valiantly earned. I'll be going back to this again and again.

I liked some stories better than others. In some I could see myself and some bored me, but overall I enjoyed this reading

You listen to your heart beating into the mattress; its stoic, earthly thump, jingoistic in its resolve, foolhardy in its rhythm.
I'm lowering my rating to 3. A decent collection of short stories but most are forgettable. All of the narrators seem to blend into one another.
I read this book as an Ebook on Apple Books.
He said he deserved a girl...but that's blonds for you. And with all that gold framing their peripheries, it's little wonder.
