Semplicemente Maestoso.

Had this book on my list for what feels like forever and just now had the motivation to start and finish it due to the new movie coming out later this month (and maybe with the moral support from the book club as well). Before I started reading it, I've always thought it would be something daunting and difficult to get through. This is me today realizing that it's just my depression and anxiety masking most things that I'd like to start but just haven't yet lol

I found myself reading past parts where we'd have to stop for the week, and even bought the audiobook to complement it when I just didn't feel like reading words on a screen. While I know there's other books in the series, this one patches up the arc quite nicely. I occasionally had to tell myself that it was a product of its time (re: fatphobia, homophobia, etc.) but the world-building and the characters themselves hold up well even today. I'm glad I gave this book a chance and I can't wait until the movie comes out!

Life-changing reading. Dry, barren, so un-sexy and bleak. So nearly self-inflated and -important, but just toes the right side of the grand/grandiose line. Epic.

Immersive. Herbert creates a unique and richly detailed world filled with political intrigue and mysticism. I struggled at times with the writing style and slow pacing. Certain passages were vivid and arresting, like a meditation. Other passages contained repetitive words and awkward dialogue. I found it difficult to connect to individual characters as the emotional beats were often hurried and didn't seem to follow any emotional logic that I could perceive. I did connect to the characters as archetypes and the love/loyalty that they shared with one another, however.

i barely got through this book.
Not my thing. For sure. Pretty boring tbh. Still not 100% sure what happened.

I think I'm probably at a 4.5 on this one. When will Goodreads implement half stars?
