I really love the outline of this book and certain small but impactful character interactions. The whole piecing together of it is where I struggle.

The plot moves at very quick pace just jumping from one problem to the next with very little recovery time. Most of these problems are battles of some kind, and they can get quite tedious to read because I can never fully keep track of how the character moved from one place to another. The author will take a few paragraphs to describe Freya standing on the deck of a boat, but only a sentence to explain four battle moves. I think there is the right amount of descriptive text in this book, it’s just in the wrong place. Also, this book just really needs a line editor, mis-spellings, extraneous words, conflicting pronouns etc.

The second biggest problem in this book is the legion of thieves. Because of the title of the series, I am assuming they will come into play later, but the scenes with them are just so forced.
Freya knows next to nothing about this league, and yet she doesn’t ask questions, she just plays there little game.<\spoiler> They played no role in this book, and inserting them   In this manner forced Freya to act like a fool.

The final problem I want to touch on is Freya’s inconsistency. I cannot pin this woman down for the life of me. Does she have a problem with killing? I don’t know. Does she support sacrifichi one life to save many? Haven’t a clue. Does she value information and use that to make decisions? No, she doesn’t, but she is presented like she does. The best example I have is how she describes Hetty. In the first book, Hetty is her equal just playing a different hand then Freya in the same game. She recognizes the horrors of life Hetty has endured are different, but still very relevant to who she is. The two of them have different skill sets to use at different times that ultimately help them both. In this book, Hetty is a precious woman who must be protected, and Freya alone must save them.

And those problems are so much more frustrating because I really do love the world and all of the other characters, which is why I am almost tempted to rate it higher. I want to know more about the different countries. I want to know more about the Paral. I want to see what happens to the other characters.

So all in all, like the story don’t live the delivery. I will read the next one if I remember, but won’t set a reminder on my phone.
