Review from 2013 (much younger me) 2.5 stars
I don't know why this book has such high reviews, I mean it's a good book but I could easily put it down and go do dishes and come back hours later. If a book is good I can't do that.
I will read the second one but I don't have very high hopes :S
Review from 2020 4.5 stars
How did I rate this 2.5 stars? At this point I have read this series so often I can pick anywhere in the book and continue reading like nothing.
You all know those kinds of books.
I adore this series. The main character Mercy is badass without being topdog/alpha. You get introduced to "all the pies" Mercy has got her fingers in without having then shoved down your throat or one overshadowing another.
This book left me feeling happy. It leads off into the next without having a cliffhanger of an unfinished job.
It's hard to explain why this series is my favorite but it feels like home. This is my go to series when books start ticking me off (reading too many duds in a row) or if I'm feeling particularly moody in my reading.
I just started reading the "mercy Thompson world" in order and I do recommend doing it that way. You don't feel like you miss details in this series but there is so much behind the scenes knowledge you learn in the other series "Alpha and Omega"

I almost didn't read this book because of the cover. I know the old saying, but I judged it anyway. It has been in my library for quite awhile. I just started reading the book, and it is very good so far. I am only half way through it, but want to warn everyone to IGNORE the cover. The book is good.

Quite easily my favorite first book in urban fantasy. I don’t know if it has to do with found family and a pack but I loved all about it. I cannot wait to continue!

Definition of a guilty pleasure read. There is nothing spectacular about the writing, the plot, the worldbuilding, or the characters (outside of a few exceptions), but that doesn't stop the story from just being fun. Sometimes that is all I really want. Great for an easy urban fantasy read. Reminded me of the Dresden Files.
I will say that the main character is one of the exceptions. As a walker (someone who can shapeshift into a coyote) with native genealogy, she is a somewhat unique protagonist. Being relatively rare and raised by werewolves, she has no idea the extent of her abilities, which makes it convenient for her discover just how special she is. And I concede, she is special and more importantly, someone you want to root for. I will say there was one other interesting character that I think was portrayed well and I want to learn more about (Z), but everyone else in the story wasn't engaging or endearing and if the Mercy moved to Fiji in the next book and never spoke to anyone from the first book again, it really wouldn't be a loss.

I have read this series a few times and was so excited when they announced a graphic audio recording! It was really well done, though a few of the casting choices took me out of the story as they felt off (Bran, Ben and Zee in particular).
Still, I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to listen to the rest of the books as they are recorded.
