I adore Feyre; yet Nesta speaks to me in ways her sister’s character couldn’t begin to—enough for me not to mind the 3rd person omniscient. I think I preferred hearing of them, through them, rather than from them; all the thoughts of the Night Court members lived up to my expectations, yet still had me on an emotional rollercoaster. Throughout the series, I remembered exactly why I fell in love with slow-burn romances way back when—it only makes the scenes so much better. And by the time I got to this book, I craved the long journey of undiluted tension. To my surprise, Nesta and Cassian burned their way through that journey and left me reeling, desperate for more. SJM didn’t disappoint. I may have fallen in love with the Night Court back in ACOMAF, but they wholly own me now. Fiending for more.

this is an insane bildungsroman.

i actually really enjoyed the exploration of female friendship, trauma and mental health - it was very accurate and nearly brought me to tears a couple of times. i really wanted to like this more than i did, as the constant berating and nastiness towards nesta made the book painful to read (they never really even gave her a chance, and cassian definitely could’ve stuck up for her more instead of just bowing to rhysand being a dick). feyre and rhysand are the most insufferable selfish characters in this universe it made me soooo mad. plus this has all the generic problems of a sarah j maas book e.g. overwritten.

Nesta is a great character. I’m also a big fan of Cassian.

SpoilerI hate Rhysand in this book.  Being so shitty to Nesta who is clearly suffering, being stupid enough to make a “I’ll die when you die” pact with Feyre, and worst of all: lying to Feyre about her own body/health after being so adamant about always giving her a choice in her own fate, this soured his entire character for me. He decided for her what she could handle and then Feyre forgives him pretty quickly. Both felt out of character and gross. Rhysand also treats most of his loved ones like shit in this book and it’s written off because “it’s instinct for him to be overprotective of his mate especially while she’s pregnant blah blah blah” and everyone forgives him. But Nesta is constantly in her own personal hell and acts gruffly to those around her and they all treat her like shit.
