I really enjoyed Nesta's journey and the way it showed her working through trauma and PTSD and finding coping mechanisms and dealing with triggers. I loved the development of her friendships with the other girls and the development of her relationship with Cassian. But there is way too much graphic smut that is really not necessary at all to the plot. Things do not need to be described to be present, and it knocked the book down on the rating. While I personally prefer no description, I resignedly can gloss over a scene, but there were a lot and it really just got annoying having to skip forward to actual plot and character development.

If you look at book reviews of series, you’ll typically see that by books 3, 4, and further, most ratings below a 4 have steeply dropped off. This is because the only people who have continued reading into the series are predisposed to like the books.

Anyway, this book 4 is a shitshow that screamed MoneyGrab to me. Like an author and publisher had seen the money rolling in from the first books and going “can’t we just… keep going and add some more?” This book seemed far less thought out, and doubled down on the sexy bits while shoehorning in some plot here and there. (Hence feeling very much like pandering)

Boy, was this a SPICY book.

I didn’t expect it to be this spicy, considering the past few books having a nice mix of politics and war in it. While this book did have some action, a lot of it was a romance, which I did enjoy a lot.

I always liked Nesta, even though she was such an unlikeable character the past few books, but the character development in this book was so good. She really got her redemption arc, while it also worked to tell us a little more about the other characters. Her determination and attitude made her a really fun character to read about.

I do wish it had a little more of Feyre and Rhys just because I’m so used to their POV with the past few books and I felt there wasn’t much except about the baby. Regardless, I loved Cassian and Nesta’s hate to love dynamic, and was delighted with the depiction of Nesta and her female friendships.

Their friendship was so wholesome and needed to kind of break up how dark parts of this book were. Overall, really liked getting to learn more about Nesta, and I hope the next few books announced lean into Elain and Azriel so we can get to know them more.
