This book was well written with a lot of cultural aspects I got to learn about. I'm not taking off any stars based on quality of writing, I just found it really hard to real. The wording was difficult at times, there was a lot of sexual humor and bodily humor that just went a little too far for me. There is graphic violence of the sexual nature described and I honestly found it scary to see women through the eyes of a thirteen year old boy. But still, an interesting read.
Graphic: Rape, Sexual assault, Sexual content, and Sexual violence
Moderate: Gun violence and Physical abuse

CW: rape, underage alcohol use, sexual assault, sexual content, domestic abuse, physical abuse
This is my second Erdrich book and it was very good. It's told from Joe's perspective after his mother is raped and he tries to seek justice for the man who did it. Throughout the year, I've been seeing more awareness raised about this topic, especially Missing and Murdered Indigenous Womxn (MMIW). Girls and Two Spirit get added to the list on some organizations. But this book cuts to that topic about the crimes that are never prosecuted against Indigenous peoples. At times the book was difficult to read due to that, but, ultimately, the book is a rough coming of age story for Joe. He's 13 when this crime happens and forces him to grow up beyond his years, get involved in things that most 13 year olds wouldn't. And it's painful to know that this isn't uncommon and hasn't changed since the book came out eight years ago. Overall, an excellent read, but one that isn't easy.
