3.5 probably? Incredibly well written, it just meandered too much. I imagine if the plots of later books are faster this series will pick up for me and become a favorite. As most people say, I don't know if you can get more historically accurate naval fiction than Patrick O'Brian. So many sailing terms...

I loved this book even more the second (or possibly third) time around.
The narration by Ric Jerrom is absolutely sublime and the relationship between Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin is a joy to watch as it develops.
Patrick O'Brian is, without doubt, the best writer of this genre.
