This wasn't for me. I had hoped for a book about gardening, but while there is a little of this it's far more emotional and based on the mindset of the author, who seems more interested in themes of motherhood and trauma than in the actual gardens and plants. The idea that we are all gardening to escape some kind of heartache I found jarring, and while her style was largely readable I also felt like it was trying too hard to be writerly. I didn't finish the book.

Considering how many writers I have interrogated about why they write it’s truly shocking that I have never deeply questioned why I garden. Alice Vincent explores that question in expected as well as surprising ways. I suspect the gardening women I know and love will really enjoy this. It’s quite British in terms of the plants but there is something universal about what pulls us to get our hands into dirt and tend plants and seeds and trees. I listened to the audiobook, the printed book will be available on 16 May.

Gorgeous. Wasn’t convinced at the beginning, but completely in love by the end. Alice Vincent has a lovely writing style, really rich and evocative. Made me think a lot about me and my garden.
