This fed into one of my recent obsessions (the War of the Roses) - but it was just okay. The book really dragged after a while, and I got impatient for it to be done. I did like the take on Elizabeth Woodville / Richard of Gloucester / Henry Tudor - it was well-done and nicely explained. I may poke at a few more books in the series - but I certainly don't feel like I need to read all 34 books up to the modern day.

How often do you read a saga that begins in medieval times?! I really enjoyed this book and gorged myself on the Morland Family over the next 20 books or so (and oodles of generations )quite happily. A good curl up on a rainy day series.

Sweeping historical fiction of a York family during the War of the Roses. I wanted to like this more than I did, it is highly episodic and full of character and incident without a great deal of true plotting. I kept expecting levels of foreshadowing or meaning that never did appear. Having said that, I was interested in this particular take on the period and there were moments and scenes that I enjoyed quite a bit and I am interested to read the next installment in the series.

I really enjoyed the story of the Morland family but the author switched between fiction and non-fiction too quickly to give the reader background. I appreciate that but it was done rather abruptly. I hope, for future books, the author doesn't feel the need to prove she researched this.

So here is the deal with this book.
Much if the book is historical details that read like “ and then this happened then this then then this then this” but it is interspersed with juicy soap opera level intrigue that centers the fictional Moreland family. I had set in my mind that I would not continue this series but my curiosity is getting the best of me so on to book 2 in the series of 35!
