Airplane reading. I liked it, but it's exactly what it says on the tin.

3.5, rounded to 4

I'm conflicted about the rating for this book. It was written well, and the characters were engaging. I thought the premise - a gay sub offering to help "train" a straight Dom - was intriguing. And the interactions between them were definitely hot.

My conflict largely comes from the fact that humiliation kink makes me cringe. And not only is Eddie a pain slut (by his own admission), he gets off on being humiliated. So there's face slapping, being called "bitch," and so on. Those parts of the story were not as enjoyable to me. But seeing a Dom gain his confidence, as well as accept truths about himself, was a fun journey.

I loved this book. But... I hate it in same time.

I don't know what to think.

So... 4 stars.

misogyny served with a sprinkle of homophobia and general bigotry 😍 and… bad hygiene? why the author chose to make the protagonist a reddit incel is beyond me

I wanted to like this British straight guy falls for gay man romance. The characters had funny moments. But there was so much misogyny here that I couldn't quite hold together the romance-dream-world necessary to enjoy the book. And while there was an effort to make the sex playful, it came across as overly clinical instead of erotic. I think the target audience for most of these books is actually women, not gay men. But I couldn't really imagine this book appealing to either women or gay men. But I seem to be in the minority, since the book has glowing reviews from lots and lots of women. I'd read something else by this author--there's a glimmer here of an author that might be able to write a good book, even if this one didn't quite excite me like I wanted it to.

This book is just not the right fit for me. I don't have the patience to wade through Jeff's homophobia, misogyny, fragile masculinity, and increasingly futile attempts to convince himself that what he's doing isn't gay. Plus it turns out that the word "bitch" is a strong turn off for me, so its repeated use kind of ruined the sex scenes for me.

I love Josephine Myles! She always writes unique, even quirky characters you come to love and cheer for.

This book only astonished me in the fact that I finished it. I won’t have much to say that you can’t already read in other much more articulate 1 STAR reviews, (and you absolutely should read those first). The amount of misogyny, classism, and, yes, even homophobia in this entire book is alarming at best and horrifyingly harmful at worst. Not to mention the inaccurate and poorly laid out representation of the BDSM and Kink community.

Do yourself a favor and skip over this read.
