5/5 What can I say? I'm a fan of Greek mythology and this book really delivers. A very entertaining and informative read!

Fun to read, but those Greeks just had too many characters and stories.

The book seems to be informative but the font of the book is small and can be hard to read the book. It is good that it highlights the history and a bit of the culture of the myths and Greek people. The myths doesn’t seem to be in order at all, it is confusing to the chapters. It can be a bit tedious because it doesn’t tend to add much but it is good that it tends to add the different details the Greek myths have throughout locations. It is a bit of a plus for adding a pot of pictures and family trees. There’s a chapter that is not tied in to the myths but the history of different families, their stories don’t go anywhere other than to show dynamics of the different families. I would have taken another star if there wasn’t the chapter about gay relationships. After that everything else is interesting and even better that it does draw a line between Greek and Rome (which aren’t the same myths).

Buxton put together a great overview, analysis, contextualization and survey of Greek mythology, including great artwork and very helpful maps.

A great resource to pick up for anyone interested in a basic overview of Greek myths and their significance on Greek culture. However, because this book took more of a Greek civilization route, the myths themselves were bare-boned. I would have preferred a more in depth look into the variation that exist in various Greek myths.

Overall, I enjoyed reading through this. Now I really need my professor to send us that list of recommended readings for the summer...

At only halfway through this book, I've decided to forgo finishing it. I've tried to like this book, really!!! The last 20-30pgs have been really tough to get through. I guess I like my greek mythology is story format, kind of like the Iliad and Odyssey. This was definitely NOT that. It was actually really confusing to read. Once again, love greek mythology but next time I'm in the mood for it, I will be much more selective about the kind of book I choose to spend my time reading.
