Possibly the BEST non-fiction book I've ever read. I've never visited northern Saskatchewan, and never been much north of Prince Albert, but this book made me want to go see the northern communities that make our province home.
The first third of this book, while a little slow, is spent setting up details, describing the 'how' of how the three authors came together, and critical information about Brady and Haclkett, who lived very interesting lives. The slow nature of the first third pays off big time in the remainder of the book, which gets as action-packed as non-fiction can get.
The book is a who-dun-it that invaded my sleep and dreams, and a book I spent some serious time thinking about as I did household chores and walked.
The ending comes unexpectedly, with the mystery never really solved. It was frustrating as a reader, but I also completely understand why Nest, Reder, and Bell published the book that way, and a big part of what makes this book enjoyable is how it honors First Nations traditions.
Definitely worth a re-read and I'll be recommending this book as a MUST for every Canadian I know.
