That art though! I liked this floating world, and found the characters fun and interesting.

This has an interesting concept for the plot and story but I just couldn't get by the bad watercolor artwork. Everyone has green faces...ugh. The drawing of the people also was a huge turn off for me....sorry not for me.

Was unsure whether to list this among my goodreads entries as I try not to include items that don't hit the mark for me and this one kind of falls into this category - its potential: a floating city whose internal political and social structure is kept stable by a secret cabal family of assassins, conmen and thieves (ably assisted by intelligent cats with whom they can communicate), outperformed its execution.

Part of the problem was the main character Jessa, it was unfortunate that in comparison to her uncle the bookkeeper, and maestro of cats?, and her cousin Ri, a genderqueer and very astute spy assassin with a wicked wit, Jessa comes across as both quite dull and also quite annoying in her bullheaded determination not to acknowledge her areas of weakness and her blindness to others. To be honest I would have preferred a comic that focused more on the side characters and it is because of them and because of the world building here that I have to include this graphic novel. There are some fascinating concepts to explore in the world of the float and I did enjoy the glimpse of the family manipulation where it is orchestrated. I will just have to see how the focus goes with the characters in later novels, oh and try and put to the side the fact that the art itself is not quite to my style:

Although the ballast added an interesting lore element, I found the artwork way more charming than the story. The color direction is beautiful. I think almost every color is used in a murky watercolor style.

This girl makes so many mistakes while trying to be an assassin that it's unbelievable. But the main one crying that she needs to be in the family business. She better be glad the head dude got a soft spot for her.

The story's a little all over the place, but I had fun reading it.

Strong protagonist, great world building, And Yass! Talking cats! Well, they speak cat, but humans can learn too.

I’m just not a fan of the watercolour style of comic art. I respect the talent, I just don’t personally enjoy the aesthetic.

This was a bit difficult to get into immediately, I think due to the unique art. However, once I did, I really liked it. It’s a complete story arc, so that is also satisfying.
