the occasional second person perspective of Violet talking to her grand niece threw me for a bit of a loop but otherwise the story was engaging. i appreciated the diversity of backgrounds in these two families that the stories center around and seeing how the japanese occupation impacted different cross-sections of hong kong’s population.
i’ve happened to be reading a lot about this period of history in east asia & recommend Green Island (Shawna Yang Ryan) and A Map for the Missing (Belinda Huijuan Tang) for similar books set in Taiwan and China respectively. more recs on this theme: https://app.thestorygraph.com/tags/8e1248d4-5029-47c2-8c9d-d6a6f86866ff
