Took me months to finish it. It was tedious I don't really know what I didn't like, I feel like it wasn't clear enough on how its world works, especially the magic parts. The characters could be good if the relationships were given more room to grow. I ended rooting for Tomas because I felt like he was the only one with an interesting story to tell, but even then it wasn't clear. I feel like some parts were rushed but too long at the same time.

Very confusing book for me, but it has potential, I'll give the rest of the series a tey to see where it goes.

This book was great!! It has everything I look for in a good book. Magic, monsters, vulgarity, sensuality, and a whole lot of gayness. It was a hidden gem that I am glad I picked up! I am currently reading the second book, and I can't wait to find out what happens next!

If you are looking for a dystopian fantasy novel that just so happens to have mainly queer characters, then look no farther than this! I am looking forward to reading more works by Alex!

Audiobook review. Narrator: Zach Villa

I don't remember how I came across this book - maybe as the Audible deal of the day or in an audiobook newsletter - but I'm glad I did. I loved this book, and I sincerely mean that. The world building is great - I'd call it a magical apocalypse. All types of magic, beings, and rituals are thrown in, which may be too over the top for some readers, but I enjoyed it. I liked the way the author slowly wove the past into the present via Tenn's memories.

But what made this book stand out from other fantasy type stories was Tenn, Tomas, and Jarrett. Sometimes less is more, and the fact that there were no explicit sex scenes made the interaction between Tenn and the seductive Tomas that much hotter, and the romance between Tenn and Jarrett that much sweeter.

Sadly, some readers will be turned off by the gay theme and quit before the story gets going. That's too bad because they're really missing out on a good fantasy.

The narrator did a great job with Tenn's voice (the story is told from Tenn's first person point of view), capturing Tenn's mood with perfect inflection. I hope that the second book will be out in audio and that the same narrator is used.

Sigh. Yet another book that I've lost interest in. I started reading it, but then got distracted by a pretty shiny new book called The Queen's Rising which I read all the way through one sitting, and now am interested in more books similar to that one.

I *will* read this one day!

The chosen one trope just isn’t for me. On top of that, post apoc fiction has a 99% fail rate for me as well, so I’m just going to call it now.

Very cute debut novel! I found the plot to be lacking just a little bit, and the protagonist suffered from the old dose of "special sauce" that made them super unique, but I'm looking forward to the next one because INCUBUS!!!
