Great story, an idea I've never seen before! I liked its originality, and the characters were lovable. A book that's been one of my favorites for years.

Rereading this book has been amazing! I was hesitant to start this because I remembered it being really good, it was one of my favorites when I was growing up. I've read this book so many times part of the cover has worn away.
While I was able to remember the main story, I couldn't remember much of the actual plot. I remembered key moments, but not how the book went from point A to point B. I felt like a kid again reading this story. There's a line in the book about bringing your own books on vacation and how memories get caught in the pages. Well, I think my 12 year-old self got caught in these pages. I can't remember how I reacted to the twists in turns the first time I read it. But while I knew what was happening, I had forgotten enough to still be surprised. There were moments were I was shocked or worried and others that made me so happy.
Dustfinger has got to be my favorite character. He's so interesting and because he only wants one thing, it causes him to change sides pretty often. I need to continue with this series because I can't remember anything about his backstory other then what we got in Inkheart. I know we know more in Inkspell and I never read Inkdeath, so thats a must.
I still really like Meggie. She was exactly who I wanted to be as a kid. I loved reading almost as much as she does. It took me 10 years to read half the books she references in the story.
I'm so happy that this book is still a favorite. I've read childhood favorites before as an adult and they don't always live up to my memories or they are actually problematic. I was so worried this book would end up being lackluster. I feel almost double the joy from this book. Not only is it good, but it's also nostalgic.
I'm so happy this was my 100th book of 2018. I was hesitant to read another book because what if it was terrible. I just needed my 100th book to be something I really enjoyed and thank goodness it was!

I liked the premise of this book, and I admired the author's ability to make a whole range of characters (male and female, of all different ages) real and compelling.
The problem was the plot. It was small enough you could have put it in a teakettle and drowned it. And yet the large-print edition of the book, which I read, runs to nearly 700 pages. You might get away with that if you could write like Tolkien (instead of just quoting him), but either Funke can't, or she's had a bad case of inflamed translator.
I'm reminded of what the director David Lean supposedly said about Kevin Costner's movie Dances With Wolves, which is that he enjoyed it but he'd like to show the younger director how to take an hour out of his movie. A good editor could have taken hundreds of pages out of this book and made it more fun to read.

It might have just been lost in translation, but this book didn't quite have the driving plotline I thought it would. The premise is excellent: an evil character springs from the pages of a book and torments the real world. However, the pacing was off, often keeping me from picking up the book for more than a few minutes at a time. Everything is so detailed, that I skimmed a lot of paragraphs because they couldn't hold my attention. I expect children's fantasy books to be more exciting and more inventive than the constant "run to the evil guy's village, escape, return, escape" format. I won't be reading the others in the trilogy.

While this book is not my favorite in the Inkheart series and, truthfully, I grudgingly read it. It is a very good book and paves the way for much greater discoveries in Funke's next two installments of this series.
