Stephen King is a skilled author, good description, we'll rounded plot and characters, this is never in question. His pace even in a short story is slow and plodding. There were only two relatively small issues I took with this book. One, I couldn't figure out the point of this story until after the half way mark, we weren't told about the escape until that point, until then it was just a slow plodding prison story. And two, in the escape there is a claustrophobic portion of the escape that I completely skipped over because I would have lost it.

Such a great story. I’ve seen the film so many times and was a bit surprised at how short the book is but Stephen King is a master storyteller and the book didn’t disappoint.

Ignoring the blatant racism, classism, sexism, ableism and misogyny this book is bland. I loved the movie so I thought this would be a good step into Stephan kings work. Boy was I wrong. If all his books are like this, I’m never gonna read another. The story is told from the perspective of Red about Andy. I feel like half the book could’ve been left out, especially the end. I skimmed ~15 pages because I wanted it to be over so bad. I am disappointed but not surprised.
