what an amazing account of solitary from so many important perspectives. everyone should read this book. i can't believe we treat humans like this, and i'm glad this book has inspired changes in the use of solitary in the US. the accounts are brutal, but also reveal the human behind the prisoner, very important to read if you can handle it. if they can handle it, i feel that we should be able to read about it. and the perspectives from family members and correctional facility workers rounds out the experience of solitary.

Solitary confinement must be banned. It's an affront to human rights and dignity. Clearly, the United States needs a radical transformation of its prison system, as well as its justice system. There is no notion of rehabilitation and thus once an individual enters the penal system, they are scarcely equipped to live within their communities again, particularly if they spend long stretches of their sentences in solitary confinement.
