I really enjoyed the premise but he execution fell short. Still, it was a pulpy good time.

I wasn't that jazzed about this concept when I heard about this novella initially. Alternate timeline with hippos? Huh?!? But I kept seeing positive reviews of it and thought, why not read it. Personally, the writing and the overall story really pulled me in. I don't think I could give it 5 stars (too many loose ends), but I'm looking forward to reading a full novel in this setting.
