will i recommend this book to people ? yes. did i enjoy reading about
“incest” within the first few chapters as well as rape scenes between the MC and one of her love interests ? not really 😭
however, i was able to relate to and understand plenty of things in here in regards to my relationship with lesbianism as well as the world around me.

Overall I enjoyed the pace of this book, and I enjoyed watching Molly learn and grow as she moved further into her life. I especially loved how unapologetically herself she was. Her boldness in a time where she could have been severely punished for it was really cool. However, this probably isn't a book I would automatically feel compelled to re-read without a specific reason.

Bold and honest account of the life of a woman’s journey from childhood as she discovers her sexuality and how others react to her revelation in 20th century USA. Interesting to feel so immersed in the life of the main character, and understand her thoughts and feelings, feel her losses and betrayals. Not always the most likeable main characters, which I enjoyed. A truly honest account.

I can understand why this was perceived as shocking at the time of  first publishing, not because of the theme of lesbianism, but the tone and word choice is often harsh, blunt and direct. There are some explicit scenes which are not written akin to a modern day romance novel. The main character is rightly unapologetic in how she lives her life, with a hint of aiming to intentionally shock.

It is hard to rate a book that has such historical significance for queer women - so a neutral rating seems fair.

I can see why it has the praise it does, to read about such a confidently queer female character in a book written in 1973 and set even earlier was really interesting. To see the struggles that came with being queer and working class in the USA at the time was also very illuminating.

However, the stance the book takes on some issues disturbed me. The acceptance of incest was particularly jarring and made me extremely uncomfortable. The several dub-con moments between the main character and others was also difficult to read and never critically discussed. The bandying about of slurs and racist opinions was also something that was not handled as well as I would have liked. There was also very weird adult/minor sexual relationships and moments which were extremely uncomfortable but not called out.  Be warned it is also very sexual, this is not a criticism, but it was something I was not expecting to that extent and did find a little difficult at times, especially when the main character was a child.

Overall, as a queer woman I am glad I read it due to its importance to the community but I do not know if I could recommend it to others without a whole slew of warnings attached.
