The FMC in this story was quite annoying in the fact that she was such a pushover and only stuck up for herself at the very end. The MMC was also annoying. He was rude and too arrogant for my liking. This book also talked about death, dying, and cancer a lot, which just wasn’t something I wanted to read about.

Maddie needs better friends. The Devil Wears Black is fun, emotional and, frankly, aggravating. Maddie has been let down or belittled by almost everybody in her life, and she is consistently made to feel worthless. How she manages to get to the end of this book with a smile on her face is beyond me.

Aside from Maddie deserving far better than everything she’s been given, The Devil Wears Black has excellent banter, loving characters, and enough depth to pull at your heartstrings without turning you into a blubbering mess which I can always appreciate. At the heart of it, this book focuses on the importance of family (found or otherwise), communication and loyalty. It is a stark reminder that life is too short to deny your own feelings or settle for less. It encourages you to “stay creative, always”, to stop and smell the roses, and to go a bit feral for the person you’re in love with.

It doesn’t always feel like it but “survival trumps tragedy”. Every day is a blessing, a difficult one but a blessing nonetheless.

Also, no happy ending for Daisy and Frank??? Wtf???

I love @authorljshen 💖

I never thought I would be a contemporary romance girly, but she has me in a chokehold. The Devil Wears Black is no exception.

PROS:
🖤The complicated and intricate family dynamic
🖤Maddie’s character growth
🖤Chase’s character growth
🖤Boogerhead
🖤Lovers to enemies to fake lovers
🖤The cancer storyline is handled very well

CONS:
🖤Nobody loves a martyr (or is that just me)
🖤The infighting for a CEO seat is something I am never going to ~understand~ even if I understand it because that is just above my tax bracket

Honestly I did not expect to like this book as much as I did. I often dislike alpha male love interests, but I love the enemies to lovers trope, so I figured I would have a 50/50 chance of liking it. Surprisingly, I enjoyed Chase's character arc, and at times I even liked him more than I liked Madison. I am definitely going to read more books by L.J. Shen because something about her writing works really well for me.
