"The idea made her sick and scared, but so what? Why did it matter if something scared you, when it simply had to be done anyway?"

"The Alice Network" by Kate Quinn is a riveting historical novel that intricately weaves together the stories of two incredibly well-developed female protagonists—one a daring spy during World War I and the other a determined young woman searching for answers after World War II—creating a captivating narrative that vividly brings to life the espionage, courage, and friendship that span decades. Quinn's writing style is, as always, engaging, and the novel is fairly historically accurate with a nice redemption arc, though the pacing can vary between the two timelines.

A must-read for fans of historical fiction!

4.5⭐️ This was a fascinating story and so well-written. I loved how it shed light on a topic I knew such little about, female spies during World War I, and kept my interest from start to finish despite the length. This book alternates between two time periods and two perspectives: Eve during WWI as she works for the Alice Network and Charlie in 1947 as she searches for her cousin who went missing during WWII. The two stories weave together seamlessly. I highly recommend reading the author’s note at the end, which is not included in the audiobook (I read most of the book but tried a few chapters on audio when I couldn’t put it down). What really stuck out to me was Quinn’s decision to include a female hero who stutters, which was accurately depicted in the novel, as well as seeing what elements of the story were based on true events and people. If you want a historical fiction, and need a break from WWII, this is such a great choice!!

An empowering story of a women's spy network during WWI. This is my second Kate Quinn novel - I read the Rose Code last year and it was a five star book for me. I felt that there were a few slower spots in the plot of The Alice Network, hence my 4 star rating. But overall, a great book that I would recommend. I particularly enjoyed how Quinn wraps up the story at the end and appreciated her authors note. She has such a great way of explaining what came straight from history, what she changed for creative and pacing purposes, and where she elaborated for the story. I'll be reading The Diamond Eye next, as it is my book club's May pick!

I think it's worth noting that this book has pretty heavy themes of abortion as it relates to teenage and unwed pregnancy. Quinn did a nice job of telling the story of each character and making you feel her life and challenges, rather than taking a political stance. It would definitely be a book club conversation starter. Especially considering today's (2022) heightened attention on the topic.

Feeling #blessed to have started off my 2022 with three five star books in a row. While this book started off SLOW, once it took off, it really took off. The attention to detail and layers to this story were carefully constructed and the executed beautifully! It was a long read- over 500 pages- but well worth it!

This book was a one I didn’t really want to put down. I liked both timelines and love how Kate Quinn described and portrayed the network of female spies. I thought the characters were interesting and I did love how she was able to have moments that made me smile. Looking forward to reading The Huntress.
