I've finished, finally. I chose this book as the 'banned book' in the 2015 reading challenge. I found it hard going, depressing and found some parts of the story unclear. Not a book I'd choose to read again.

This is one of those books that I can appreciate more than I can say that I actually enjoyed. That's not a bad thing, but it does make it difficult to rate alongside other reads.

Plus, any group discussion that begins with "Emma Bovary as quintessential desperate housewife" must have some wit to it, right?

audiobook note: I drove miles out of my usual travels to procure the recording by the divine Davina Porter and was not disappointed in the least.

quite average… lack of plot for 300 pages and writing quite dry but very readable!

I picked up this book to explore a bit more of classics. I see what it made essential and even scandalous at the time but I could not make myself to care about the characters and plot.

I feel like I would have enjoyed this book more had I given myself more time to read it, but my copy came in frighteningly close to the date I had to read it by, so I had to cram it. I don't think this a bad novel by any means- I think Flaubert wrote an excellent novel, rich with subtleties and allusions. Rather, it just wasn't the book for me. Emma's boredom and dissatisfaction seemed to resonate too much with me as a reader, as most of the novel dragged on. Emma's desperate search for happiness became clearly in vain early on in the novel and relentlessly spiraled for the rest of it. I understand and respect Flaubert's authorial choices, but they did not produce an enjoyable read for me.

MADAME BOVARY is a MOOD, y'all. And that death scene. I was NOT READY. And why is Charles so enamored with her? What an oaf.

I can't say I loved MADAME BOVARY but I'm definitely glad I read it for myself. I'm grateful to Anne Bogel and the Modern Mrs. Darcy Book Clubb for giving me reasons to dive into books I might otherwise never read. We paired MADAME BOVARY with Emily Itami's FAULT LINES for April 2023 and that has been a delightful duo.
