This is part memoir, part biography, following Carew's journey of researching her dad's fascinating life as his own memories are lost to dementia. The first half focuses on his work as part of the Special Operations Executive during the Second World War, supporting national resistance teams first in France and later in Burma, while the second half explores their dysfunctional family life. The nature of her dad's life means the narrative is quite chaotic and she interweaves stories from the past with recent stories about dealing with her Dad's dementia. It's often funny as well as poignant and she paints his eccentric personality so well. It also served as an interesting history lesson since I didn't know anything about the Burma campaign and whilst I've studied the French resistance I never learnt about the SOE's involvement.
