Hesse convinces again with a sorrowful tale of young Hans, a gifted boy, torn apart by religious teachings, elite school, the innocent expectations of his surrounding peers who do not know better and love.
It has life's ups and downs and reads slow but steady.
As to how you read it depends on where you currently are in life.
For me it made me glad that I have been pushed to skill without having to be the best and that what I achieved is enough, no matter what others may think.
Please be kind to yourself and don't burn away your youth.

Graphic: Death, Emotional abuse, Mental illness, and Suicidal thoughts
Moderate: Bullying, Suicide, Grief, and Alcohol
Please don't read this if you're deeply depressed. It's a beautiful book but can do harm if you're in a really bad place in your youth. Please be kind to yourself.readingoccasionally89's review against another edition
