One of the best books I’ve read in awhile- and I’d been putting off reading it for years because I didn’t think I’d like it.

Really complex and lovable characters, and Rooney has a great attention to detail and foreshadowing. I don’t want to “spoil” anything, but she writes  Marianne in particular with so much compassion and empathy and does such a commendable job at showing the feelings and the impact of (in her words) Marianne’s “family situation”.

surely this is not an uncommon sentiment but the lack of quotations did take some adjusting to

i enjoyed the premise of the book, and i found the writing compelling, but i felt that i was somehow unable to connect/fully emphasize with the characters. i finished this book feeling indifferent about it so 2.5
