I liked this book a lot more the first three times, and it’s lost its charm some.
I like when books have multiple plots, and this book is one of my favorite examples of that.

It was pretty good from the beginning, but Oh my God it is impossible to put down once you reach the halfway point

I really enjoyed this! The humour & all the character relationships—especially Alex & June’s. Alex and Henry are utter dumbasses but their interactions are so fun to read and their love story is so full of heart 😭. I binged the last half of this after work and was crying for most of it.

Politics-wise the escapist fantasy I think this was intended to be, unfortunately kept dragging me back & reminding me of reality :|

Disclaimer: I am incredibly wary of political figures. It’s fuck the British monarchy and I hate US democracy. I was pretty cynical from the beginning of this book because it seemed like a very much idealized version of political leaders, and I couldn’t help but be bitter. However, as more of the story unfolded, I became swept up in Alex and Henry’s story. The prose is so romantic, using just the right words that had me falling in love with Henry right alongside Alex. There were many moments where I was moved to tears, because Alex’s love is so immense. And since obviously they’re long distance, the pining is just.. so.. good. I loved seeing them come together and I wish I could protect them from all the bad things.

Most of the political aspects took a backseat in my brain majority of the time, but I was definitely less cynical and more hopeful in a way by the end. In the acknowledgements, the author describes the book as “escapist, trauma-soothing, alternate-but-realistic reality. Not a perfect world—one still believably fucked up, just a little better, a little more optimistic”, and I think they accomplished that, at least with me.

i did really enjoy this book and the romance was built up in a really nice way and while having much more obscure problems due to politics it also explored a very realistic and relatable side to the characters. it would've been 5 stars but i felt that the major conflicts that had been building up over the course of the book were resolved much too quickly. the build-up was much more impactful that the resolution and that's where it lost some points from me. still a really enjoyable read with relatable themes and characters
