I loved these books. The first book, The Hunger Games is intriguing and filled with surprises because when I was younger I thought it was a girl traveling a long hiking trail with a piece of bread as her friend, but I was completely wrong. The Hunger Games has so many twists and turns! I couldn’t put it down. I cried when Rue died. It felt like I was living the story with them. This was such a meaningful book. 5 stars

So after I finished that book I had to read Catching Fire. In my opinion Catching Fire was the worst book. It was less eventful and the only part I felt truly connected to the characters was the beginning before they go into the arena. Again though, I cried when Peeta made up the pregnancy story. I couldn’t tell if he was faking or not - which was what I thought throughout the book.
3.5 stars

Catching Fire leaves you on a cliffhanger that is so confusing you have to read Mockingjay. I think Mockingjay was a great book, I couldn’t put it down and would stay up to eleven pm so I could keep reading. Given that though it was very sad. Finnick dies, and basically everyone else in her group so that made me cry. Peeta has gone psycho, and tries to kill katniss. Except for those things this book was amazing. 4 stars

I wish I could have given this 3.5 stars. The first book was great and the second set up for the third, but the third was poorly ended in my opinion. It seemed like the author had a page limit and when she realized she only had 100 pages left to wrap it up, things just got thrown together.

ill never not be FASCINATED at the similarities in how the captital in the books and movie adaptations went about presenting the games. anywayyyy

THE HUNGER GAMES!!! these books are So Much when i was twelve (ish) and studying dystopian fiction in class i was immediately captivated by these books. years later, they still hold up so so much….the commentary on the elite, on propaganda, on war, on oppression, on the perseverance of love - collins handles it all so adeptly and katniss is THEE perfect protagonist. man. the hunger games….

Given all the hype, I really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, I didn't. The characters were not very well developed, and as such, I couldn't relate to any of them. The plot was linear, where one thing followed from the last, and so on all throughout the trilogy. It seems that this linear plot was by design because it translates so easily to a movie format. However, the linear plot really doesn't make for such great reading. Moreover, the entire story could have easily been developed in a single book. Stretching this simple story over a trilogy was again seemingly for the purpose of maximizing profits. The writing, and the plot development, deteriorated over the three books. I felt relief when the end finally came; not for the characters I should have cared about, but for me, for not having to read any more of what was nicely wrapped up by the end of Book 1.

It seems to me that this book was a marketing contrivance, designed specifically to maximize profits. The linear plot makes for easy movie-making. The trilogy seems to be the literary fashion of the day, which lends itself easily to three movies. Sadly, the simple plot wasn't enough to warrant three books.

This was a captivating read. I came into it a little late, and was able to read the first two books back to back. Having to wait a year for the 3rd installment, I found myself not really remembering (yet not having the time or desire to reread the first two, or at least the ending of the second book). The third book wasn't as compelling as the first two. I really liked the 2nd book. My son liked the first, but hated the second and didn't have any desire to read the third.

I loved this series when I was younger, and it still holds up reading through it as an adult. It's very easy to immerse yourself in the world of the books, and to feel for the characters. Definitely a series I'd recommend.
