It wasn't a bad book by any means, the characters interesting and the setting well described and atmospheric. Being one of her earlier books though it lacked a certain something for me, but was well worth reading none the less. Alice Hoffman has a distinctive voice as an author and she likes to set impopssible situations and scenarios for readers to be challenged with.

I couldn’t justify reading it anymore, the writing was not good enough to justify the fact that the entire plot was based on incest for no apparent reason w no explanation, the dialogue was completely stilted.

I love Alice Hoffman, and normally her books grab me and hold on. I think the difference for me with this one is that both of the female main characters were heartbreakingly passive, waiting for someone else to rescue them and just letting life happen to them and it just hurt to watch it. But it’s still a beautiful book, and I enjoyed it.

My review will not be any different than the reviews of others. Had I known that the book involved so much incest, I wouldn't have picked it up. The writing is good though and I finished the book in a day. I was so much hoping that there was a second marriage between Theresa's and Silver's parents, that they weren't really related; and once near the end of the book I thought that might have been the case, but no.

I cannot imagine being in a family as dysfunctional as theirs, but I suppose it happens.

I did note a hint of magical realism in the book and I always enjoy that aspect of a story.

I enjoyed Alice Hoffman's The Red Garden, but this one made me feel guilty for continuing to read it. I just can't handle incestuous relationships.

My least favorite that she’s written… for many many reasons.

This is an incredibly uncomfortable book. The end.

So sad. I often wanted to shake Teresa & tell her to grown up, take care of herself & get some emotions.

The characters weren't engaging enough, or maybe I was just too pregnant to enjoy any book?
