This was fine. I was hoping for more insight as a reader of poetry but this was targeted mainly to writers. I still learned some.

I picked this up after seeing my friend with a poetry MFA post it on IG stories. This is pretty aces as far as a compact but informative 101 for the technicals of poetry and gave me a good vernacular for, sure, how to write it, but almost as importantly, how to read it.

I really liked this—a slim, clever volume that lays down a few good truths about the practice of writing poems. I may use this the next time I teach a beginning workshop, though I will always have a soft spot for [b:The Poet's Companion|266126|The Poet's Companion A Guide to the Pleasures of Writing Poetry|Kim Addonizio|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1223676426s/266126.jpg|258014].

This books is a great overview of poetry, coming from someone who hasn’t spent much time learning the intricacies of the medium. It covers the basic terms and concepts well, and balances it with a wealth of insights from Oliver, which I found almost more valuable than the technical aspects of the book.
