I wasn’t expecting to read a book I’d rate so highly after only getting through the first 30 pages. I loved the style, the narration, and the poignant way of diving into one life and zooming out of it. It reminded me of five people you meet in heaven. I love this concept and was positively surprised at how well this was done.

That aside, there were many instances where I related strongly with Nora. “Expectations” being a particular passage inside the book that struck a chord with many, and I am no exception. Please go into this book with no expectations. I’ve picked it up solely because I saw a friend (hi, Léonie) reading it and decided to give it a try as well. I went into it blind, and that was the best choice I could’ve made in order to be able to appreciate the situations detailed inside the rather short chapters. (The short, yet meaningful chapters are the best that modern literature has to offer, lemme tell ya.)

Anyways, 10/10 recommend!

Heed the TW: suicide, hinted self-harm, mentioned sexual harrassment, toxic relationship, mentioned drug and alcohol abuse.

I found myself innately drawn to the main character. I have also dealt with significant depression for the majority of my life. I have also wondered about other lives I could have lived had I made different choices, or if my body wasn't as worn as it has been at such a young age. It's somewhat comforting to believe that there are infinite possibilities that I could have explored. I've felt that immense desire to not be here anymore and this book really spoke to me. I will be purchasing the book, and I know I will read it again.

Honestly, I hated this book. It was super depressing, with no content warnings, and it felt like the book thought it was more profound than it really was.

This book was a downer to me for a minimum of 75% of the book. I kept waiting for the character to reach out to friends even if she didn’t reach out to family and she just didn’t. It was hard to watch her try out lives based on themes of that one relationship! that one friend! my cat! success! fame! It takes so much more than one person, animal or concept to build a happy life.
