In a world where the multiverse and parallel timelines have become the new 'thing', The Midnight Library is about the middle of the pack. It was nice. As someone who identified strongly at one point in my life with 'beginning of the book' Nora, I do admit I had to restart a book a few times over the course of the last year.

The book didn't really hook me in until probably 60% through. About half of it I listened to with Carey Mulligan and her performance really helped me stick with it more than the content of the book itself, I think.

The ending was a little too cookie cutter. I mean, we all knew from the first page how it was going to end, right?

I really felt a lust for life after reading this. Truly. Thank you for writing this Matt.

I wasn’t expecting to read a book I’d rate so highly after only getting through the first 30 pages. I loved the style, the narration, and the poignant way of diving into one life and zooming out of it. It reminded me of five people you meet in heaven. I love this concept and was positively surprised at how well this was done.

That aside, there were many instances where I related strongly with Nora. “Expectations” being a particular passage inside the book that struck a chord with many, and I am no exception. Please go into this book with no expectations. I’ve picked it up solely because I saw a friend (hi, Léonie) reading it and decided to give it a try as well. I went into it blind, and that was the best choice I could’ve made in order to be able to appreciate the situations detailed inside the rather short chapters. (The short, yet meaningful chapters are the best that modern literature has to offer, lemme tell ya.)

Anyways, 10/10 recommend!

Heed the TW: suicide, hinted self-harm, mentioned sexual harrassment, toxic relationship, mentioned drug and alcohol abuse.

I wavered between 3/4 stars on this one. I’m sure the intent of the book was to tell us to appreciate what’s good in our lives and not focus on the bad, or “live life to the fullest” or some other trope; but mostly what I felt was sad even after the book ended with the main character wanting to live. It almost made me feel the opposite: that no matter what choices you make, you are always going to hurt someone and you are always going to experience pain. It was a fast read and each iteration of the character’s life was interesting, but it wasn’t inspiring or uplifting (for me) in the way that it was probably intended.
