Shakespeare did it better... if you're looking for a good Marlowe book pick up Doctor Faustus instead

Begins tragically, continued farcically, ends abruptly -- Marlowe wants to write an evil genius, but is much more adept at writing victims than morally corrupted antagonists.

More enjoyable following analysis of themes and motifs, primarily due to ambiguity.

Full on Marlowe is not kidding. If you require an awesome early example of anti-semitism; here you go. But Barabas (the Jew) is such a bad person, made in cruelty, that he’s the perfect villain to root for. This man goes nuts.

Bleak, dark play, with an anti-Semitic underlying assumption, yet none of the other characters come out well, and you can see why Barabas behaves as he does. Influential on "Merchant of Venice", and I saw a superb production in Stratford once, but a play full of violence about fundamentally unpleasant people.

Read again as part of the REP Marlowethon. Full of bits we will see again in later plays - and not just Shylock. Powerful, brutal stuff.

this was pretty good. i read it for my early modern british lit class, and we did a subversive reading of it. i did find some parts boring, though

Entertaining while reading it but I, like with Dido, can’t imagine coming back to this of my own free will for a reread.
