Non avevo mai letto un hard boiled prima e devo ammettere che il genere mi piace e mi intrattiene moltissimo. Saranno le atmosfere fumose (e famose grazie alle pellicole americane più o meno demenziali che ho visto nel corso degli anni) di città americane durante gli anni ruggenti del boom post bellico, il fascino di uomini tutti di un pezzo e personaggi sempre e comunque, privi di interessi che vadano oltre il loro ruolo e con gli occhi spenti e privi di aspirazioni. Saranno le storie poliziesche o, meglio, da detective privato che stuzzicano la mia curiosità. Quel che é certo é che reputo l'autore molto capace, dato che fino a metà libro sono stata assolutamente convinta di star leggendo qualcosa scritto negli anni sessanta (il libro é invece uscito vent'anni dopo). Il protagonista, Angel, é il prototipo del detective con licenza...ma tutti gli altri personaggi principali rompono violentemente gli schemi di figure di contorno, psicologicamente semplici. Di pistole fumanti ce ne sono più d'una, metaforicamente parlando, e sparano tutte prima della conclusione della storia. La fine non mi é piaciuta, tuttavia, come avrei desiderato e visto l'andazzo entusiasmante del resto della storia: l'ho trovato un po' a tirar via, senza l'impatto emotivo che un epilogo del genere poteva creare nel lettore.

Watched the movie years ago and reading the book made me want to watch it again. Movie is superior to book - book is more like ‘1950’s movie detective’ with some dark twists that you don’t see coming…unless you already saw movie.
The movie has much darker overall atmosphere and more emotional impact. Louis Cyphre is way more scary in the movie. And having plot partly in New Orleans works better I think.
Novel is still worth a read and interesting to see how author (who also wrote screenplay) can tell the same story in two different ways for different media - both good in their own way.

Even though I figured out the twist ending midway through, this was a great read. Well done mystery, mixed with some unsettling horror.

Avevo visto il film quando uscì e, per quanto mi sia piaciuto, il libro ha più senso. Forse nel film hanno voluto esagerare con l'aspetto grottesco e soprannaturale del racconto, ma questo romanzo si rifà ai gialli e thriller della vecchia New York. C'è l'investigatore privato che dice frasi da investigatore privato, che si prende a mazzate coi cattivi, che entra ed esce da abitazioni altrui a piacimento facendo attenzione a non lasciare impronte, che si innamora della bella testimone ma non riesce a dirglielo. Ci sono i pedinamenti in taxi. Ci sono i ricchi con hobby inusuali - la magia nera - e il musicista jazz di colore. C'è anche una traduzione vecchiotta che trasforma il cheeseburger in panino con carne e formaggio, e manda in giro il suddetto musicista jazz con una borsa da bocce scozzese (bowling, maybe?). E poi sì, c'è il vudù. E c'è la solita biblioteca americana da cui è possibile portare a casa antichi grimori per studiare con calma il rituale della messa nera a casa propria. Diciamocelo: le biblioteche americane sono una figata! Provate voi ad andare dalla vostra bibliotecaria e chiederle di darvi tutte le pubblicazioni sul vudù presenti nella vostra sede. In verità il nostro eroe va a una biblioteca universitaria, ma lo stesso...
Tornando alle galline sgozzate: sì, qualcosa sul vudù c'è. Come potrebbe essere altrimenti, quando il tuo cliente si chiama Louis Cifer? Ah, i sottili giochi di parole!
Insomma, alla fine ci godiamo un piacevole giallo con un colpo di scena finale che si intuisce ben prima del finale stesso, e questa è l'unica pecca. Secondo me l'autore avrebbe potuto essere meno lineare di tanto in tanto e lasciarci qualche dubbio. Povero eroe dagli occhi chiari, in fondo cosa puoi aspettarti da un datore di lavoro con quel nome?

I really wish I'd read this before watching Angel Heart. Even though that was years ago, I remembered the main plot twists which ruined a lot of the tension and intrigue. Still a great book, and much better than its film adaptation. It does drag a little in the first half, but the pace really ramps up when Angel becomes more involved in the occult stuff.

worst ending ever. it's not only that it was abrupt but that it didn't even make sense. almost seems as though the author didn't know where the story was going and just decided to finish it. would not recommend this.

This is very slick fun. I like a pulpy mix of hardboil with voodoo shenanigans.
