This is the kind of book I’ve always wanted to read and never knew existed: meditations to move towards Black liberation in a (possibly) academic world. I will hold onto this book probably forever.

Beautiful. Thought-provoking, heart-engaging, body-resting. Love pours off these pages and invites us to learn and feel.

I found this kind of writing hard to digest as a book, to read straight through. I think I would've enjoyed it as a picture book or a coffee table book more, but reading it straight through didn't feel as flowing to me, and I found myself skimming to get through it. I think my approach to the book didn't allow a true appreciation for the writing style or content.
if I could go back and do it again (and maybe I will), I would read more slowly and in chunks, and take each reading as an opportunity to reflect and to write inspired, and meditate on its themes.

I enjoyed this and found them to be thought-/feeling-provoking essays. As a bit of an animal/science writing nerd, I was excited for more animal info and didn't realize how much this was more of a meditation/poetry book. Even so, I enjoyed it but I think my mismatched expectations made it hard to read in the right headspace.
