The overuse of beautiful prose becomes laborious and slow. There were interesting ideas explored but it was not always clear what the author was trying to comment on; a lot of the book appears contradictory. It was very vivid and evocative at its best, but quite often came across as pretentious and unfocused, especially in the middle of the book.

This book definitely has problematic elements. I mean I know its from the POV of young men but the description of the young women etc you can very much tell is written by a man who doesn't know women 😭 That being said I couldn't put the book down tbh! It was interesting to realise that you never truly know the Lisbon girls' POV, you never truly know who they are apart from what has been observed. Its a very tragic story.

Almost all of my positive associations while reading this stem from my affection for the movie version, and the hope that the creepy narrator will somehow pay off (he did not).

It's saving grace is that it's somewhat brief, but the fact that chapters go on for ages make it feel infinitely longer.
