This book centers about a young half-Chinese orphan Ernest, who is raffled off in 1909. As the story unfolds it centers around Ernest, Fahn and Maisie, in 1909 and Ernest in the 1960s. It's a story the full of heartbreak and hope. I loved the cast of characters and I'm shocked this actually happened in Seattle!

The second book of Ford’s that I’ve read this year, and third of his overall - and now my favorite. A story full of vivid characters set in perfectly described scenes. Ford has such a gift. I felt for Ernest, Fahn, and Masie with each page turn, and the ending melted my little heart. Well done.
