Here is why I only gave this book two stars: There is way too much text.
It is marketed as a fictional book for fans of Jory John and Christian Robinson. For one thing, those are two very different authors and illustrators. Next of all, the book more encourages the history of certain instruments that, while fascinating, makes this book fall into the non-fiction category. I was hoping to say it would work well for storytime. But nope.

A humorous introduction to the various band instruments with a great deal of information about each one. The narrator is a very enthusiastic band teacher eager to show the more common instruments found in a band, except for the oboe, so you pick the perfect instrument. The problem is that whenever we are about to hear the sound of an instrument an equally enthusiastic young girl plays the drum, and we never hear the sound of the eight instruments described. Vibrant and fun illustrations, this is a fun one for those who love and play music or want to learn more about the instruments played in a band. A great one to add to your collections.

What a fun book about music and band instruments! Make sure your music teachers and band directors know about this one. As our band director starts going through the different instruments, talking about how they are played, how they make music, and fun facts about them, he keeps getting interrupted by an overzealous bass drummer. Funny and factual, this one would make a great readaloud for music classes.

Fantastic!! This is a very silly book about a band director attempting to introduce all the amazing instruments you can play! Every time he's ready for a lovely woodwind to play some delicate and beautiful notes, a particularly excited child (Felicity) bangs on the drums and drowns out the other instruments. The director is getting increasingly frantic and frustrated, that is until he reaches the tuba -- the only instrument louder than the drums! I won't spoil the ending, because it is a genuine delight. There's something for everyone, including kids who just want to make a lot of noise.

The title may feature the oboe, and the drums’ Boom! Boom! Boom! may punctuate each page, but the real star of this book is the tuba. So how could I not love it?
I combined this with a video that had a similar brief introduction to different instruments, and my five-year-old and I had a great time for probably close to half an hour. These illustrations are full of earnest, diverse musicians, the text is packed with onomatopoeia, and while this is a little long for the younger set, it makes for a great readaloud.
