Reviews with content warning for Xenophobia - The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

”A veces, Coriolanus se preguntaba si los dejaban allí para recordarles a los ciudadanos lo que había sufrido. La gente tenía muy mala memoria. Es necesario esquivaran escombros, que arrancaran los mugrientos cupones de racionamiento y asistieran a los Juegos del Hambre para mantener la guerra viva en su recuerdo. El olvido daba lugar al exceso de confianza, y entonces volverían todos a la casilla de salida.”

Acabo de terminar este libro y tengo demasiados pensamientos encontrados.

En primer lugar, si bien lo menos relevante, es momento de mencionar que, gracias a este libro, pude romper una racha de bloqueo lector de más de cinco años, que me dejaron con ganas incluso de más. La calidad de Suzanne se mantuvo prácticamente igual que en la trilogía principal, haciéndome hablarle a las páginas como si me pudieran responder. Es más que seguro que, apenas pueda hacerme de una copia de dichos libros, la pienso releer.

La propuesta de un Snow enamorado, hablando mal y rápido, me hizo mierda. Yo tenía en mente a este personaje como un ser despiadado y sin alma, pero saber que alguien fue capaz de hacerle sentir algo. . . me hizo chillar más de una vez. Lucy Gray me sacó de mi zona de confort de lo que esperaba de un tributo, y saber que lo que a los 75 años de la guerra conocemos como juegos sean en gran medida resultado de Snow incluso me hace más sentido de lo que esperaba.

Sin embargo, la tercera parte del libro hizo que, de no haberme enganchado desde el primer momento, serían dos o tres estrellas en lugar de cuatro. Entre la vuelta de los acontecimientos como el abrupto final, siento que fue un meh.

En un momento teníamos un Snow enamorado que pensaba aceptar una vida en el doce como agente de la paz con tal de estar de Lucy Gray a escaparse de ella. Me hubiera gustado que se vaya con ella, que hubiera pasado una temporada en la intemperie, una narración en trilogía en lugar de generar un clímax un tanto apresurado.

Me hubiera gustado que, en caso de que tuviera que terminar en un solo libro, se hubiera desarrollado distinto.

¿Y si no traicionada a Sejanus así? ¿Y si Sejanus hubiera llevado a cabo su plan sin que siquiera Snow se hubiera dado cuenta para así fallecer en ese plan? ¿Y si Lucy Gray hubiera fallecido allí, en ese atentado al campo de entrenamiento?

No solo que se armaron huecos con la trama principal, porque, teniendo en cuenta que fue la única tributo sobreviviente quien entrena y protege a Haymitch, tendría que haber habido más contacto entre Snow y Lucy Gray.

Entiendo que los Snow siempre caen de pie, pero no creo que tendrían que haber conseguido todo. . . no así. El epílogo se siente vacío, nombrando todo lo que le salió bien a la familia de las rosas. Espero una segunda parte, porque lo siento como un inicio de una nueva etapa de la saga, no solo un libro auto-concluyente. Porque, de haber sido solamente eso, hubiera quedado completamente inútil; porque cuando leí los planes que él tenía para un futuro, cómo ocurre todo al final. . . se sintió como un producto sacado de Wattpad, en el cual la escritora se queda sin idea/ganas a medio terminar y solamente se apura porque tiene un público atrás pidiendo en comentarios que dé mas contenido. Es más, de no tratarse de Suzanne Collins (y sabiendo que mi juicio no es completamente objetivo con ella), podría mencionar muchísimas notas respecto a la relación de los dos protagonistas, y todo lo que se podría haber cambiado para mejor respecto a sus interacciones en caso de que se hubieran querido realmente, y no se hubiera utilizado mutuamente. Porque, en defensa de nuestro pobre Snow, ella también se estuvo aprovechando de él de la misma manera, principalmente en la última parte del libro.

Pero bueno, quitando los detalles de los personajes individuales, agradezco completamente que hayan ampliado un poco más el universo construido detrás de los juegos, y de Panem en general. Ahora solo pido que no me dejen con las ganas de saber más sobre como pasamos de tener a los tributos muriendo de hambre a tener todo un negocio a su alrededor, más allá de los detalles que Snow generó en este libro.

Si Sejanus no hubiera aparecido en el distrito, apuesto lo que sea a que Snow se quedaba allí con la cantante, y eso hubiera audio hasta poético. Irónico pensar que el pobre deseaba apoyar a la rebelión terminó forjando al peor enemigo de los distritos.

I didn't think I would really like this book. I'm not a big fan of prequel but this one... Well, it was really great. I like how the hunger games were incorporated. We weren't following the tribute's POV but the mentor's POV. It was different.
Since it is during the 10th Hunger Games, I really liked how the games were not as developped as the book 1.
For Snow, I liked how his development was complicated yet really simple.

He was always hungry for ambition and power. He was just distracted for a little while by love but, at the end, he did return to his beloved ambition

If you're picking this book up after reading the hunger games trilogy, then honestly I'd say I not worth it. Look up the basic plot and leave it at that because this book does not live up to the emotional wonders that the hunger games have. It feels like all the colour was stripped out. The best part of all the hunger games books are the actual games right? Because they're deeply emotional and everyone is running on adrenaline and a willingness to kill. But in these hunger games, barely anything happens. It's dragged on for way too long. everytime a character dies its just bland, like it's narrated by snow watching it on tv, and it reads like watching a grainy video with no sound as a character stand another then moves on. The whole thing feels like security footage being played for half the book. Then 2 thirds kf the way in it feels like the entire plot of the book is abandoned (no spoilers just look as the section title). The only redeeming factor I'd say would be knowing a little more about what makes snow tick, and why it hates 12 so much. But like I said, just look it up, don't bother going through all 517 pages. The writing style is also very elegant, but that can't make up for bland characters and lack of a cohesive plot line. It wasn't a horrible book, and the idea to write about snow was definitely a good one, but Collins could have executed it much better.

if you ask me, I think some interesting stuff could have happened if snow had gotten stuck in the arena, there he could have maybe became part of the games, and it would definitely have amped up the plot and give the hunger games fans much more if what they loved about the series in the first place. There's a reason many people think the series went down hill after catching fire, it's that the environment the games make is so tense that it's almost impossible to write a dry plot.

So in conclusion, the ballad of songbirds and snakes was annoying average, with few redeeming factors to warrant it a slightly higher grade, but without it's association with the hunger games, it would probably never have been shelved.
