First, this book has a fold-out map at the beginning! So, that's an automatic 3 stars right there. I have an interest in Syrian culture since my husband was born in Damascus, but he is from a Christian family and I am discerning when it comes to reading about the culture. The authors of this book are Christian, yet they really give an all-around perspective. Much of what is related was familiar to me from my husband's recollections as well as stories from my mother-in-law. The recipes included in the book seemed accurate and actually fairly simple considering Syrian cooking is considered to be quite complicated and complex. Overall, I enjoyed this book. There were a few little editing issues and perhaps a few translation misfires, but none of that takes away from the friendly neighborhood feel that the reader is left with, much like one is left feeling after a visit with a Syrian family.

Bittersweet reading this book considering current events. It is a lovely book. Schami and his sister give you a feeling of the neighborhood and people. It's like you are having a chat over coffee.
