I enjoy reading mystery novels with my 5 year old because she believes that every single red herring must be the ABSOLUTE TRUTH.

A fun little book!
There's a youtuber who has played some Nancy Drew games that I've been meaning to watch and she got me interested in the whole Nancy Drew series. I saw these books at a Dollar Tree and thought it'll be fun to read them. Glad I got them!

It’s nice to see Bess have some actual skills. A decent intro to the Nancy Drew universe.

Honestly, mysteries have never been my thing, but many of my students love them and one student asked me about this series, so I decided to give it a go. For its intended audience I think it did a nice job. There were age-appropriate plot twists, 3rd graders making safe choices, but still acting like 3rd graders, and cute illustrations.
Some of the characters could have been a little less stereotyped (did the girl who was a computer whiz really have to prefer going by George rather than her real name Georgia? Did the rich girl's mother have to sing every time she entered a room? did the tall girl have to like basketball?), but taking into account the formulaic nature of this series in the first place I think it was in keeping with the brand.
