“You can notice all the little details you want all day long, but none of it means anything if you can't take a step back and see the bigger picture.”

Daniel Cole went straight to my list of favorite thriller authors after I finally read the whole Fawkes And Baxter series earlier this year. I've been looking forward to read this stand-alone serial killer thriller ever since, and it might just have been that I set my expectations too high... Don't get me wrong, Mimic is by no means a bad read, but somehow I felt that some of that special spark the series has was missing here. I think this has mostly to do with the fact that I wasn't as invested in the main characters. I don't mind flawed characters, but some of their personality traits were a bit too cliche detective. This made it harder to connect to them, and the constant POV switches within the same chapter didn't really help either. That said, I did love the premise of this story, with the chapters first set in 1989 and then in 1996 when new evidence is discovered. I have a weak spot for serial killer thrillers, and Mimic definitely features a particularly twisted one. Would I have liked for his identity to be kept hidden for longer? Oh yes. Were there even more cliches involved along the way? Most definitely. But the case itself made for some very engaging (and disturbing!) reading, and I do love my thrillers on the dark side.
