I’ve enjoyed watching Sex Education in the past and I was so excited when Hachette Kids sent me a review copy of “Sex Education – A Guide to Life”.

This guide is trying to help you learn more about your body and bodies of others, sexuality and gender, safe sex and abortion. It’s created in a fun and engaging way. It’s colourfully illustrated with easy to understand and not too long texts and some of the Sex Education characters make an appearance here and there as well.

I was happily surprised that there was a huge focus on friendship and healthy communication. There’s sections about gender identities and sexualities, including tips to find out more about yourself and definitions of terms like intersex, genderqueer, asexual etc.

In general, I was glad that the texts often tried to include people with disabilities and trans people e.g. when talking about period related topics simply referring to “people”.

I had a tiny problem with a sentence (“Everyone has to have their first kiss some time”) because that just isn’t true. On the other hand, it is mentioned again that some people may never want a relationship and that people don’t need a partner or specific experiences to make them “whole”.

I think this book can be a wonderful guide, to not only teens, but also grown-ups, because there’s so much we all weren’t taught in school.
