This felt weirdly short. It felt like it ended right when the plot was just starting to get going. It makes me wonder if this series was deliberately stretched from two books into three. It would explain why some parts of this seemed to drag on so long and then the abrupt ending right when things started moving.

Lost a little luster, but overall a good read

Solid 3 stars.

Some interesting questions were answered in this installation of the Thirteen Realms series. More specifically, we are learning more about Allegra, Raven, and some new characters that will probably be playing a pretty big role from here on out. I still love Raven’s character, and I wish he would develop into more of a hero role, but sadly, I think he is going to remain a side character. Boohoo.

Allegra got on my nerves a little bit in this book. She was reactive, which played out very damsel-like, and in need of rescue, more than being an independent and strong h. I will not suffer through a TSTL heroine. In the first book, she played a big role in solving the mystery of the king’s disappearance, and in finding the king. In this book, she didn’t take charge of her fate at all until the very end.

The Hawk’s Character was kind of all over the place in this book too. First, he was jealous, and then stiff and withdrawn, and then he immediately believed Allegra had been lying to him without consideration of the gobs of evidence that proved otherwise, then he was apologetic and protective, and then he was the playful lover. By the end of the book I didn’t know what to expect.

Basically, I see this as a filler book for the series. It answers a lot of questions left over from the first book, and it’s leading us deeper into the mystery that surrounds Allegra. I’m anxious to get started on the third book, I hope it gets back to the strong character that Allegra was in the first book. But above all else, I’m hoping to feel some level of chemistry between Allegra and Hawk, because right now it’s a big meh.
