I toyed with the idea of this only getting 4 stars, but I would be doing myself disservice. I absolutely loved this book. It is in no way the masterpiece that Trainspotting is, but this book is just as awful, as depraved and as cringe inducing as that one.
It had to take a different direction, it had to tread similar waters. It is a linear narrative, there isn’t as much of the dialect, there is a lot less drug use, however the main theme of consumerism and consumption and how we do that as a society is so prevalent.
It taps into a lot of my thoughts and feelings about how we are conditioned by society to shun certain products and accept others and how we do it without question.
Welsh writes effortlessly, reading it is so easy, so fluid that the pages almost turn themselves. It needs to be, because the subject matter is so dark: awful people doing awful things in an awful place. And it works. Sensational stuff, and I look forward to reading much more by Welsh.

A good way of talking about sex work in a way that wasn't preachy. Welsh always manages to talk about real topics in a way that makes you go '.... Yeah you're right!'.
It was truly excellent, I think better than Trainspotting and that was great!
