Don’t get me wrong, I love this series. But this book seems weak compared to the other two in terms of story and got slightly annoying with all the new characters. Maybe I’ll give it a second chance in the future.

These books get increasingly better as you go. It just adds upon the past books and I’m excited to see what happens next.

Rick Riordan removes familiar characters from the narrative to make way for the new - it's a great technique to introduce more characters without making the reader feel like the story is bloated. In the second book, he removed Grover to introduce Tyson and further integrate Clarisse; here, he replaced Annabeth and Clarisse with Thalia, Zoe Nightshade, and the di Angelos.

However, while I liked Book 2's new additions (Tyson is endearing, and Clarisse's motivations are fleshed out - being a daughter of Ares seems pretty intense), Book 3's were just okay. Thalia's cool, but Zoe and Bianca were so-so. Additionally, Book 3 feels like a rehash of Book 1 - it's another roadtrip from Long Island to California with less appealing characters. It's underwhelming, especially considering you got a sea voyage in Book 2.

The story ended with stakes even higher than the last time though, so I hope Book 4 doesn't disappoint!
