Thank you NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group for this eCopy to review

I grew up on Judy Blume so was really looking forward to reading Summer Sisters, however I just found it very cringeworthy in places.

The story on its own is wonderful about 2 girls who become summer sisters holidaying on Martha's Vineyard with Caitlin's father each year. There are a lot of themes such as divorce and remarriage, growing up, disabled rights, death, mental health troubles, and without the overly sexual parts it would have been a magnificent story.

I did not love this book, but I simultaneously could not put it down 🤷🏻‍♀️ it was primarily set in the 70s and 80s and I definitely felt transported back in time when I was reading. I thought character development was great - the characters I liked I really liked, but the characters I didn’t like (*cough Caitlin and Tawny*cough) I DID NOT like. It was mostly told through Vix’s perspective, but then you got glimpses of every one else’s POV too (minus Caitlin) and I really liked the way that was done. The ending was sad, but appropriate and not unexpected, which I appreciated.
3 ⭐️ from me. Spoilers ahead!

Plot thoughts: I could not stand Caitlin this entire book, and I just kept thinking what does Vix see in her? She really is a self-centered person and terrible friend. I didn’t understand or feel the intense and sudden connection between Vix and Bru, and I was literally rooting for Gus waaaay before they got together at the very end. I think the attraction/vibes between Vix and Caitlin needed to be explored more clearly….I felt confused most of the story if they were actually sexually (or otherwise) attracted to each other or not. It was just too wishy washy imo. I think some of the big plot points were kind of rushed over or didn’t make sense (when Vix leaves after she gets too high and messes around with Von at the beach or Nathan’s death or when Caitlin left Mazie) whereas other parts of the book felt like they could’ve been shorter. Overall it was just a weird book for me, but obviously sucked me in where I couldn’t put it down!

For someone who grew up on Judy Blume, she has herself grown up.
