I'll be completely honest, I had low expectations for this story- I just grabbed it off my shelf as my holds are too far out, and it was better than expected overall. It follows a woman stuck between two worlds, one fantasy, the other being ours. I did find the fantasy world Talamh (and if you're thinking that's a mouthful it's because most of the story is set in lovely Ireland) was underdeveloped and I wished the story went further, but I guess this is just a part one leading to more.

4 Stars!!

In the realm of Talamh, a teenage warrior named Keegan emerges from a lake holding a sword—representing both power and the terrifying responsibility to protect the Fey. In another realm known as Philadelphia, a young woman has just discovered she possesses a treasure of her own…

Can you say Ireland? Ahhh... what a beautiful atmosphere for a book! I really enjoyed this first installment of The Dragon Heart Legacy. It was fast paced with beautiful world building. It follows main character Breen, who is a young teacher drowning in student loans and living with her best friend Marco in Philadelphia. Her mother has always made her feel like she wasn't good enough to do much and in order to get ahead she must continue to stay immersed in her work of teaching.

Breen is house sitting for her mother, while she is away on a retreat and somehow comes across some bank statements that reveal Breen actually has a pretty hefty inheritance that her long lost father has built up for her over the years. This starts a spiral and journey of self discovery as Breen takes a trip to her fathers homeland of Ireland. There she finds a whole lot more than she expected.

Nora Roberts has a way of reeling you in and letting you immerse in her words which transport you to wherever she commands. I love the way she writes and makes you take it all in. Full of likeable characters and DRAGONS ....

What more could you ask for -

Although, I will admit- there were a few things that weren't my favorite tropes in the book, that didnt change my overall view of the story. I look forward to reading the next book of the series!

WARNING: This book isn't a clean read it does contain adult situations. Recommended for an Adult audience.

Thoughts
Neutral thoughts:
The writing was kind of off. It felt like there were missing words in sentences & the pacing of the dialogue was all over the place in the “non magical” world that we meet Breen in. This just felt campy to me. Like I was reading fanfic & was just reading it cause it wasn’t overall bad, just a little bit ridiculous. I am still interested in reading on in the series, despite its campiness, cause I think the world building was interesting as well as the over arching problem. But this SERIOUSLY, needed some editing and format changes to help with the flow of the narrative.

Pros:
The relationships in this? I absolutely loved. Breen’s and Marcos friendship!! It was so cute & wholesome. They cared so much for each other & were each other’s biggest supporters

I don’t understand why well-established authors, who have been in the publishing industry almost as long as I have been alive, feel the need to write main characters who write a book and on their first query letter not only get an amazing agent but also get a series publishing deal? Frankly, it is more unrealistic than an alternate reality with fae.

This would've been a four star but
(1) there was way too much time spent on the set up for the magical world
(2) does everything have to be a series?

The premise was great but the actual story felt clunky. It fell victim to, what is often, second book syndrome. It spent too much time setting up the future and not enough time on the single compelling story that pushes you to pick up the next book.
