Not as strong as the preceding couple in the series, this one had a VERY obvious murderer - I knew who was most likely very, very ealy on, and was absolutely right. The interpersonal elements seemd a bit disjointed too. Hopefully it picks back up again in the next one.

These keep getting more and more like the Detective Lynley series - not as straightforward as the first couple, and I like that. I was surprised we didn't hear anything about the busker's mom. The backstory kind of blew me away, I was not expecting it to be so dark.

On the one hand, I did want the characters to process and deal what happened in the last book which happens to a certain extent. On the other hand, I just didn’t enjoy this one as much as some of the others in the series. Duncan and Gemma definitely feel like real human beings the way they are written with all of the inherent messiness that comes with that, but that doesn’t always make for the most fun read. I will admit that I mostly read mysteries for escapism, and overall, this book was maybe a little too real life for me. Part of it was also some of the subplots. This time it’s Gemma’s turn to have romantic interest with one of the potential suspects, and while it doesn’t entirely go anywhere and she and Duncan really haven’t defined their relationship, infidelity isn’t something I enjoy in my romances even if they’re a subplot. I also didn’t really enjoy the mystery as much in this one. I did like the fact that we see Gemma actively working to have a hobby of her own outside of being a mom, a cop, or in a relationship, and the parts with Kit and Duncan working out their relationship were great. But overall this one just wasn’t as satisfying as the past few books in the series. Hopefully, the next installment will be better. Two out of five stars.
